ESL Worksheets Generator

Pick a topic and level, get a new printable English worksheet with an answer key – or do it online with instant checking.

ESL worksheets are printable practice sheets for people learning English as a second language. This free ESL worksheet generator makes them right in your web browser, with no sign-up, and nothing you create is uploaded or sent to a server. Each sheet is built from 1 to 6 exercises covering topics such as verb tenses, prepositions, articles, nouns, pronouns, punctuation and vocabulary. You choose the level (Easy, Medium or Hard), the number of questions in each exercise and the paper size. The preview on the right shows the sheet as you change settings, so you can check it before you print. Teachers, tutors and self-study learners can use the sheets as classroom handouts, homework or on-screen practice. Everything you make here is free to use in class or in products you sell, such as Teachers Pay Teachers sets, Etsy printables or KDP workbooks.

How to make an ESL worksheet

  1. Choose a level. Pick Easy for ESL beginners (grades 3–4 level), Medium for ESL intermediate learners (grades 5–6), or Hard for ESL upper-intermediate learners (grades 7–8).
  2. Set the number of exercises. The sheet starts with three exercises. Click “Add another exercise” to add more, up to six.
  3. Set each exercise. Pick an exercise type from the select menu, then choose a number of questions from 3 to 30. Match exercises count groups of pairs instead of single questions.
  4. Enter a title and paper size. Type a worksheet title and choose US Letter or A4.
  5. Turn on the options you need. Turn on Name and date line, Number the questions, Word bank (for exercises that have one) or Add the answer key when printing.
  6. Check the preview. The paper sheet on the right updates as soon as you change a setting.
  7. Make a new set if needed. Click “New worksheet” to create new questions with the same settings.
  8. Print. Click “Print worksheet” to print the sheet, with the answer key on its own page if you turned that option on. Click “Print answer key” to print only the key.

For several copies with different questions, set Different versions from 1 to 10. Each version has its own questions and its own answer key. “Copy link” copies an address that opens exactly the same worksheet, so you can reprint it later or share it with a colleague. “Practice online” turns the sheet into an on-screen exercise.

Are there ESL worksheets for beginners?

Yes. Choose the Easy level, which uses short sentences and everyday words for ESL beginners. The level changes which sentences and words are used, so the difficulty of the practice matches the learner, while the question format stays the same.

Many items are a sentence with a gap, followed by a hint in brackets or a set of choices; others ask learners to circle words, match pairs or rewrite a sentence. For example, “We ___ flowers right now. (plant)” has the answer “are planting”, and “The new library opens ___ May 5. (on / in / at)” has the answer “on”. Beginners get the same kind of item as everyone else, just at a simpler level.

The practice sentences were written for the site and checked by hand. Forms such as plurals, verb tenses, comparatives and contractions are produced by tested rules, so the answers follow the grammar you are teaching.

Can I use ESL worksheets with adult learners?

Yes. For adults, the sentences describe neutral everyday situations, so you do not need childish themes. Medium suits adult learners at intermediate level. Hard suits upper-intermediate adults, because it adds perfect tenses, colons and semicolons, and trickier article use (a, an, the).

Pick the level that matches the learner’s current ability, not their age. An adult beginner should start with Easy, just as a child beginner would. You can also mix topics across exercises, for example verb tenses, prepositions and articles on one sheet, to cover several skills in one session.

Which topics can one ESL worksheet cover?

Every exercise type on the site is available here: verb tenses, verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, prepositions, articles, conjunctions, contractions, punctuation, sentence types, parts of speech, synonyms and antonyms, and vocabulary. Each topic also has its own page, listed below, with only that topic’s exercises.

Teachers use the sheets as ESL activity sheets for pair work in class, and as ESL activities worksheets for homework or tutoring.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the worksheet as a PDF?

Yes. Click “Print worksheet”, then choose “Save as PDF” in the print window. Set the scale to 100 % and turn off headers and footers before you save.

Do the worksheets come with answers or an answer key?

Yes, when you turn on “Add the answer key when printing”. The key prints on its own page after the sheet. To print only the key, click “Print answer key”.

Can students do the worksheets online?

Yes. “Practice online” turns the sheet into an on-screen exercise. Students tap a choice, type an answer or tap words, then “Check answers” marks each item right or wrong and shows a score. Free-writing items are not scored, and “Try again” resets the exercise.

Which level should I choose?

Choose Easy for ESL beginners (grades 3–4 level), Medium for ESL intermediate learners (grades 5–6), and Hard for ESL upper-intermediate learners (grades 7–8). If you are unsure, print one sheet at the level you think fits and check how the items read before you print the rest.

Can I make different versions for the same class?

Yes. Set Different versions from 1 to 10. Each version has its own questions and its own answer key, which helps reduce copying during class.

Can I reuse the same worksheet later?

Yes. “Copy link” copies an address that opens exactly the same worksheet with the same questions. Save it to reprint the sheet later or send it to a colleague.

Can I sell the ESL worksheets I make here, for example on Etsy or Teachers Pay Teachers?

Yes. Everything you make here is royalty-free for personal, classroom and commercial use, including Teachers Pay Teachers, Etsy printables and print-on-demand products. No credit is required. The only thing you may not do is copy the generator itself to run a competing service (see the terms).
