How do you use conversation worksheets in an ESL class?

Use the sheets for pair work or as short role plays. Learners can answer the discussion questions in writing and then ask a partner the same questions. Or they can read a reply item aloud with a partner, so each person speaks a line of the dialogue.

Each reply item gives a situation and one line of dialogue, such as a friend asking “What time should we leave?” The learner chooses the natural answer, “How about half past eight?” The wrong choices answer a different question or use the wrong tense, so the learner must read the whole situation before choosing.

Are there conversation exercises for ESL beginners and adults?

Yes. The Easy level uses simple present questions and short replies, and its reply items have three choices. Medium and Hard add other tenses, polite requests, and opinion questions such as “What would you…?”, and their reply items have four choices.

The sheets cover about 100 reply items in more than 30 everyday situations, including greetings, a restaurant, shopping, the doctor, a hotel, the airport, invitations, apologies, work, and making plans. The discussion questions avoid personal or sensitive topics, so the same sheet suits teenagers and adults.

What does each exercise type practice?

Choose the best reply practices natural responses in common situations. Match questions and answers uses groups of four or five pairs, such as “Have you ever been to London?” and “No, I haven’t.” Complete the useful phrase tests small words like prepositions and pronouns, for example “Excuse ___. Where is the bus stop?” with the answer “me”. Discussion questions on 16 themes give open practice in speaking and writing, and the answer key says “Answers will vary”.

Why are there different versions of a worksheet?

Each version has its own questions and its own answer key. If learners sit near each other, give them different versions so they cannot copy from one another during the lesson.
