How to use the Tone Words List
- Open the Tone words list tab to see all 53 words, each with a polarity tag, a meaning and an example sentence.
- Open the Show menu and choose All, Positive, Negative or Neutral. The count beside each option shows how many words it contains.
- Type a word or part of a meaning into the search box, such as “hope” or “anger”, to narrow the list.
- Click Copy word or Copy example to copy text for your notes or draft.
- Switch to the Name the tone quiz tab and read the sentence under “What is the tone of this sentence?”
- Click one of the four tone words. The right answer turns green, a wrong pick turns red, and the meaning of the word appears.
- Check the “Score: x of y” line, then click Next sentence for a new sentence. The Show menu in the quiz limits sentences to positive, negative or neutral tones.
How to find the right tone word
Start by describing the attitude in plain words, such as “the writer is annoyed” or “the narrator is hopeful.” Then search the list for that feeling and compare the close matches. Angry, indignant and hostile are near neighbors, so read each meaning and choose the one that fits the text best. A precise word like indignant says more than a general one like “bad.”
What are tone words
Tone words are adjectives that describe the attitude a writer or speaker holds toward a subject, the audience or themselves. Each one names a specific attitude: sincere means honest and meant from the heart, while scornful shows contempt. The list groups these words as positive, negative or neutral, which helps you see the general direction of an attitude before you choose a precise word.
What is tone in literature
The tone definition in literature is simple: tone is the writer’s or narrator’s attitude toward the subject, the audience or themselves. It appears through word choice, the details the author includes or leaves out, sentence structure and devices such as irony. The same events can be told with a playful tone or a grim one, so the tone shapes how the story feels to the reader.
What is the difference between tone and mood
Tone is the attitude of the writer or narrator, while mood is the feeling the text creates in the reader. Tone comes from the author’s choices, and mood is what those choices do to the reader. A passage can have a sarcastic tone and still leave the reader feeling uneasy or amused.
What are some positive tone words
Positive tone words show approval, warmth or hope. Optimistic means expecting good things, and sincere means honest and meant from the heart. The list contains 18 positive words, so you can find a more exact match than “happy” or “good” by checking their meanings.
What are some negative tone words
Negative tone words show disapproval, hostility or a gloomy outlook. Pessimistic means expecting the worst, and scornful shows contempt. Sardonic means grimly mocking, and sarcastic means saying the opposite of what you mean to mock someone. For example, “Oh, great, another pop quiz; that is exactly what I wanted today” is sarcastic because the speaker means the reverse of “great.”
How do you identify the tone of a passage
Read the whole passage first, then look for strong word choices, especially adjectives and verbs. Notice punctuation, such as exclamation marks or very short sentences, and notice which details the author chooses to include or skip. Finally, ask what attitude these choices reveal, and name it with a precise tone word. Expect that several words may fit one text.
