History

Etymology

Contraction of all right, possibly influenced by regional Philadelphia English pronunciation.

A Scottish habitational name from any of several places called Aird, whose names in turn derive from Scottish Gaelic àird (“promontory, height”) or àirde (“height”), from àrd (“high”).

Borrowed from Norwegian ard (“plough”), from Old Norse arðr, from Proto-Germanic *arþrą (“plough”), from Proto-Indo-European *h2érh3trom (“plough”), whence also Latin aratrum.
