History

Etymology

From areo- (“Mars”) + -oid (“like”). From Ancient Greek Ἄρης (Árēs, “Ares”), the Greek God of War, equivalent to the Roman God of War Mars (“Mars”), synonymous use for the Red Planet; and Ancient Greek -ειδής (-eidḗs, “-oid”) suffix. Coined in analogy to geoid, the equivalent for planet Earth.
