Borrowed from Ancient Greek ἄρτος (ártos, “leavened loaf”), probably from Mycenaean Greek 𐀀𐀵 (a-to), from the compound word 𐀀𐀵𐀡𐀦 (a-to-po-qo, “bakers”). Compare Greek αρτοποιός (artopoiós, “baker”).
