History

Etymology

* As an English and German surname, spelling variant of Bach. * As a German and French surname, from a pet form of Bartholomaeus. * Americanized from the Norwegian and Danish surname Bakke.

Possibly a dialectal form of Middle English *becck, *betch, from to Old English *becc (“stream”), from Proto-Germanic *bakjaz (“brook”), from Proto-Indo-European *bhog- (“flowing water, stream”). Cognate with Old Norse bekkr (“brook”). More at beck.
