History

Etymology

From Italian bargello.

After a series of chairs found in the Bargello palace in Florence, which have a similar pattern. The palace takes its name from Italian bargello (“police headquarters”), from Late Latin barigildus, derived from the Frankish or Gothic equivalent of English borough.
