From Middle English bürȝen, from Old English byrġen, burġen (“burying-place, grave, sepulchre, tomb, burial”), from Proto-West Germanic *burginnju, from Proto-Germanic *burginjō (“burial”), from Proto-Indo-European *bhergh- (“to shelter, protect, save, preserve”).
