History
First used by Norwegian geologist and petrologist Waldemar Christofer Brøgger in 1921, named after lake Damtjern, Norway. In the original publication, both the locality and the rock name were spelled with kj (Damkjern, Damkjernit), although the modern place name is standardized as Damtjern. Brøgger's spelling is an older, dialectal spelling of tjern ("lake, pond"). In several inland dialects of southeastern Norway including parts of the Ringerike region, the initial tj was historically pronounced with a palatalized sound homophonous to kj. Danish and German mapmakers during the late 19th to early 20th century before Norwegian orthography was standardized and the establishment of rules by the Kartverket frequently spelled words with regional and pronunciation spellings resulting in damkjernite instead of damtjernite.
