A surgical procedure in which part or all of the esophagus and part of the stomach are removed, most often to treat cancers of the esophagus or the gastroesophageal junction. After removal, the surgeon reconstructs the digestive tract so that food can still move from the throat into the remaining stomach or another intestinal segment.
