History

Etymology

From Italian falanghina, possibly derived, through Neapolitan, from Latin phalanga (“pole for carrying things”, by extension “pole for sustaining grapevine”), from Ancient Greek φᾰ́λᾰγξ (phắlănx, “line, rank”), Proto-Indo-European *bhelǵ- (“beam, plank”).
