Etymology
Borrowed from French gros-grain (“coarse grain, a strong fabric”), from gros (“coarse”) + grain (“grain”) (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵerh2- (“to grow old, mature”)). The word is a doublet of grosgrain which was borrowed later.
