Inherited from Middle English Hampteschire, from Old English Hāmtūnsċīr, from Hāmtūn (“Southampton”) + sċīr (“shire”). For the development of epenthetic /p/, compare Thompson. The community in Prince Edward Island is named after the county in England. The name was inspired by nearby Wiltshire.
