From Middle English heretogh, heretoȝe, from Old English heretoga, heretoha (“commander, general”), from Proto-West Germanic *harjatogō, equivalent to here (“army”) + tog. Doublet of heretoga (borrowed from Old English) and herzog (borrowed from the German cognate Herzog (“duke”)).
