History

Etymology

From Middle English houndestonge, from Old English hundes tunge (“hound’s tongue (cynoglossum officinale)”), a calque of Latin cynoglossos, itself from Ancient Greek κυνόγλωσσον (kunóglōsson, literally “hound’s tongue”). Compare Dutch hondstong, German Hundszunge.
