A general purpose aircraft carrier, used in a variety of ways (hence 'general purpose', "GP" or jeep), such as aircraft transport ship, invasion support airstrip, ocean patrol airstrip, fleet/convoy defense airstrip. They were used to alleviate demands made on fleet carriers which have higher levels of defensive capabilities and underway speeds able to keep up with the battle fleet.
