From Greek λαοκρατία (laokratía), from Ancient Greek λαός (laós, “people”) and Ancient Greek -κρατία (-kratía, “power”), in contrast to democracy, which is derived from Ancient Greek δῆμος (dêmos, “common people”, “assembly of the people”).
