Akin to Scots lift (“air; sky; firmament”), Dutch lucht (“air”), German Luft (“air”), Old English lyft (“air”). Doublet of lift and luft. Related to aloft. Cognate with Scots loft, laft (“loft”), Irish lochta (“loft”).
