History

Etymology

Borrowed from Dharug ngarang (“little, younger”). First attested in 1827.

Borrowed from Punjabi ਨਾਰੰਗ (nāraṅg). Compare with Punjabi ਨਾਰੰਗੀ (nāraṅgī, “orange”), Classical Persian نارنگ (nārang, “orange”) and Punjabi ਨੌਰੰਗਾ (nauraṅgā, “Indian pitta”, literally “nine-colored”); the first two are doublets of orange.

Borrowed from Dzongkha ན་རང་ (na rang).
