History

Etymology

From Welsh pandy (“fulling house”).

From Latin pande (“hold out”), in schoolmaster commands pande manum "hold out [your] hand" or pande palmum "hold out [your] palm".

After a corruption of Mangal Pandey, who started the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

Blend of pander + bandy, by confusion.
