# Obtain good-quality freeze-dried instant coffee. ** Less expensive brands may be lacking in flavor, and you may need to try different brands to find one you enjoy. # Fill a kettle with clean water. ** If your tap water is unpleasant, consider using a filter. ** If you are only making one cup, fill the kettle half to three-quarters full. # Set the kettle on a burner or use a coffee maker to warm the water. # Following the instructions on the package, add the recommended amount of instant coffee to a ceramic cup. ** If necessary, you can make instant coffee in a foam or paper cup, but this is not recommended as such cups are likely to tip over and pose a risk of scalding. # When the water is close to boiling, pour a teaspoon or so of it into the cup. # If you take sugar, add it to the cup now. # Fill the cup the rest of the way with water, leaving room for milk or cream if you plan to add them. # Add milk or cream if desired. # Stir until coffee granules are all dissolved. # Let cool a minute or two before drinking.
